The Office of the Prosecutor General

The Office of the Prosecutor General leads preliminary investigations and represents public prosecution in the courts of all instances in respect of cross-border crimes and other especially serious organised crimes or crimes that have received intense public response.

The Office of the Prosecutor General supervises and advises the operation of District Prosecutor’s Offices and analyses and generalises judicial and prosecutor’s offices’ practices.

In addition, the Office of the Prosecutor General performs obligations arising from international cooperation, including participation in the work of Eurojust - as from 1 May 2004 Raivo Sepp was appointed Estonian member of Eurojust  by the Minister of Justice. The duty of the Estonian member is to gather and analyse information and to exchange it between the Member States in order to improve judicial cooperation.

The Office of the Prosecutor General also participates in drafting laws, regulations and orders of the Government of the Republic and regulations and directives of the Minister of Justice concerning the activities of the Prosecutor’s Office.

The Office of the Prosecutor General is divided into the Prosecution Department, Supervisory Department, Offences against State and International Cooperation Department and Administrative Department. Besides the Prosecutor General there are three Chief State Prosecutors, 13 State Prosecutors and 10 Assistant Prosecutors employed in the Office of the Prosecutor General.
