The Southern Circuit Prosecutor’s Office

The Southern District Prosecutor’s Office is located in Tartu and its work area covers Jõgeva, Põlva, Tartu, Valga, Viljandi and Võru Counties.

There are four departments in the Southern District Prosecutor’s Office: Tartu Department I - comprises also the prosecutors of Jõgeva (principal fields of operation: narcotic offences, offences against the person, juvenile offences and offences related to domestic violence); Tartu Department II (its competence is confined primarily to economic, corruption, and environmental offences); Viljandi Department - comprises also the prosecutors of Valga; Võru Department - comprises also the prosecutors of Põlva. The latter two departments have been formed on the territorial principle and they attend to all criminal offences committed in the said counties.

The Southern District Prosecutor’s Office employs 38 prosecutors in total: the Chief Prosecutor, three Senior Prosecutors, 14 District Prosecutors and 19 Assistant Prosecutors. Every prosecutor in the area is specialised in certain types of offences. In the Southern District Prosecutor’s Office there is also one Special Prosecutors, whose duty is to attend to priority offences on the basis of projects.
